DID YOU KNOW!
Potcakes are the beloved island dogs of The Bahamas and Turks & Caicos. They’re usually a friendly mix of breeds, known for being smart, loyal, protective and great with families. The name “potcake” comes from the old tradition of feeding dogs the leftover rice stuck to the bottom of the pot — the pot cake. Many potcakes start life as strays, but once they find their people, they’re family forever.

COPPER'S STORY: FROM the BUSH TO HER RAINBOW FAMILY
These videos capture real moments from Copper's early life, filmed before the books and before she came inside. From living in the bush near our home in Rainbow Bay to slowly building trust, forming bonds, and finding joy along the way, this is Copper's journey as it truly unfolded, one small moment at a time.
Feeding Copper in the Bush – October 2021
Before the books, before the name, before she came inside.
This video captures one of the first times we fed Copper while she was living in the bush near our home in Rainbow Bay, Eleuthera. A small moment that quietly changed everything, for us and for her.
Copper Living by our House - January 2022
She followed us home, but she still wasn't ready to come inside.
This video shows the time when Copper began living in the bush by our house. We continued to look after her, feeding her and watching over her as trust slowly grew.
Copper Finding Joy at Rainbow Bay - January/February 2022
Even while she was still living in the bush, Copper found moments of pure joy.
This video shows Copper at Rainbow Bay Beach, exploring, playing, and being her happy, goofy self. At this point, she wasn’t living inside yet, but she was already part of our everyday world.
Copper inspecting our new truck - February 2022
Every important change needs approval.
This video shows Copper meeting our new carry truck and giving it a thorough inspection. She was still living in the bush by our house at this point, but already very invested in our daily life.
Decision: approved!
Copper and her hooman Dad - February 2022
Time on the beach became part of Copper’s routine.
This video shows Copper and her hooman dad having fun together at Rainbow Bay Beach. At this point, she was still living in the bush by our house, but the bond was already there.
Copper and the curious Baby Girl - February 2022
This was the first time Copper came into the house.
Everything was new. Copper moved carefully, taking it all in, while Baby Girl watched from a distance. Curious, cautious, and observant, she slowly inched closer.
A quiet beginning, shared carefully.
ADOPT A POTCAKE!
Potcakes make wonderful family pets: affectionate, clever, loyal and full of island charm... just like me! Sadly, many still need loving homes. If you're thinking about adopting a potcake (and honestly, who wouldn't want a furry island friend), reach out to BAARK! They help rescue, foster and re-home potcakes in The Bahamas.
Every potcake deserves a loving forever home... preferably ones with nice snacks of course!
