ABOUT COPPER THE POTCAKE AND AUTHOR
Copper is a real potcake who lives in Rainbow Bay, Eleuthera, in The Bahamas. Like many island dogs, she began life as a stray — clever, cautious, and completely on her own.
After adopting us, she is a much loved family member who loves her walks on the beach and around the neighbourhood. She also loves watching the world go by and guess what... chicken jerky, her most favourite treat of all!

what is a potcake?
In The Bahamas, we call dogs like Copper “potcakes”. The name comes from the thick, tasty scraps left at the bottom of the rice pot, which were often fed to stray dogs. Over time, potcakes became their own kind — loyal, tough, clever and full of heart, Copper is very much all of these and more!
copper in real life
This video was taken in 2021, when Copper was still living as a stray in the bush and we had just begun feeding her.
the author
Hello, my name is Nicky and I am the Author and Illustrator. I spend most of my time on a beautiful island called Eleuthera in The Bahamas with my husband Stan, our two cats called Baby Girl and Frankie and, of course, our sweet potcake girl Copper.
Inspired by the island’s vibrant landscapes and the real-life rescue of our beloved dog Copper, I created the Copper the Potcake series to share the heart and humour of island life with young readers everywhere.
Blending true stories with gentle lessons about friendship, kindness, and belonging, my books celebrate the bond between people and animals — and the small everyday adventures that make life extraordinary and magical.
When I'm not writing or working on new illustrations, I can often be found walking Copper along the beach or collecting shells and ideas for the next story.
